The village of Aspa is situated just under 3 km south of the church of Björskog. The original name was Aspö (Aspen Island). The name Aspa is mentioned in 12 documents from the Middle Ages. The earliest permanent settlement was most likely established when the shoreline was about 5 meters higher than present day i.e. towards the end of the Middle Ages. It is improbable that the abundance of Aspen trees alone was reponsible for the name of the island, rather the fact that "äspingar" (small boats) were built and moored here.

The main farmhouse at Aspa was built in 1930. Many of the farms and houses in the village have been in the same families for generations. The oldest house in Aspa is probably the dwelling-house once part of the estate belonging to the Provincial Governer.
